A longtime Oconee County couple is being remembered for their devotion to family, church, and community after a crash in Morgan County claimed their lives last month.
Mitchell Gregory Lee, 60, and his wife, Jan Walker Lee, 59, of Bostwick, died on Sept. 7 when their truck went off a bridge on High Shoals Road and into a creek, according to a report from the Georgia State Patrol. The couple’s dog, Lucy, also died in the accident.
The report said the truck fell about 15 feet and landed on its roof in the water. Investigators believe the vehicle had been there for several hours before it was discovered. Both victims were declared dead at the scene.
The Lees, married for 26 years, were well-known in Oconee and Morgan counties. Friends and neighbors said they were a welcoming pair, often hosting community gatherings at their home in downtown Bostwick, where they moved in 2021.
Jan Lee worked more than 20 years as the practice administrator for Greater Athens Physicians, while Mitch Lee spent over 25 years with Johnson & Johnson. Both were active members of Briarwood Baptist Church, where Mitch served as chairman of the deacons.
“They loved their family, their church, and their neighbors,” their obituary noted, describing evenings spent rocking on the porch, weekends at Georgia football games, and trips with their daughter Blair and her husband, Sean Hogg.
A celebration of life was held Sept. 13 at Briarwood Baptist Church in Watkinsville.
