A man who has spent his entire career with DeKalb County Fire Rescue is now running it.
What’s Happening: DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson appointed Melvin K. Carter as the new chief of DeKalb County Fire Rescue on Wednesday, August 5. Carter is a lifelong DeKalb County resident and has worked for the department for 26 years.
What’s New: Carter moves into the top role at the department after spending his entire career working his way up through its ranks.
The Chief Speaks: “It is an incredible honor to serve as Fire Chief in the community where I was born and raised,” Carter said.
The Big Picture: DeKalb County Fire Rescue serves one of the most populous counties in Georgia. The fire chief oversees all department operations, personnel, and emergency response across the county.
