Atlanta residents are the biggest fans of true crime

In a world where the macabre and the mysterious captivate audiences, a new study has found that Atlanta is the epicenter of America’s true crime fascination.

According to a recent study conducted by Vivint, Atlantans have searched “true crime” 1,015 times per 100,000 residents, making them the most ardent fans of the genre in the country.

The study, which surveyed 1,002 dedicated fans, analyzed Google search trends, and explored FBI data, revealed that “Inventing Anna” was the most searched-for true crime content in Atlanta. The Netflix series, based on the real-life story of Anna Sorokin, a Russian-born con artist who posed as a wealthy German heiress in New York City, has clearly struck a chord with Atlantans.

In addition, “When They See Us,” a series that explores the wrongful conviction of five teenagers in New York City, had the highest search volume in Atlanta compared to the national average. This suggests that Atlantans are not just interested in the sensational aspects of true crime, but also in the systemic issues that these stories often highlight.

The study also found that true crime fans devote an astonishing 3.8 hours per week to consuming content. This figure underscores the genre’s popularity and the insatiable appetite audiences have for unraveling the mysteries and motivations behind real-life crimes.

While the reasons for this fascination vary, the study suggests that curiosity and a desire to understand the darker aspects of human nature are key drivers. Interestingly, the study also found that women are 2.5 times more likely than men to consume true crime content to prepare for unsafe situations, indicating that the genre may also serve a practical purpose for some.

With the true crime genre’s popularity skyrocketing and new content flooding the market, this study offers a glimpse into Atlantans’ enduring fascination with true crime. As the city continues to top the charts in true crime interest, one thing is clear: Atlanta’s appetite for true crime is far from being satisfied.
