ATHENS — The University of Georgia is welcoming 6,250 first-year students this fall after a record 51,600 students applied for admission.
The Class of 2030 gathered Saturday for the university’s Freshman Welcome event at Sanford Stadium. Classes begin Monday.
More than 80 percent of the class members are Georgia residents, including more than 220 valedictorians and salutatorians. The students attended 460 Georgia high schools and represent 143 of the state’s 159 counties.
Other students come from 43 states, the District of Columbia and 23 nations.
“Providing an exceptional education for the people of Georgia is central to the University of Georgia’s mission as the state’s flagship university. The Class of 2030 reflects that commitment. We are proud to welcome talented students from every corner of our state, as well as many remarkable scholars from across the nation and around the world who further strengthen UGA’s outstanding learning environment,” university President Jere W. Morehead said.
The class has an average weighted high school grade point average of 4.2. Students took an average of 12 Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or dual-enrollment courses.
