Students at Lockheed Elementary now have new tools to help manage their emotions and refocus during the school day, thanks to a collaborative effort led by the Kiwanis Club of Marietta. The organization, in partnership with First Horizon Bank and Piedmont Church, provided 48 beanbag chairs and sensory bottles to enhance the school’s existing Comfort Corners.

These spaces, available in every classroom, are designed to help students regulate emotions using sensory tools such as noise-canceling headphones, visual aids, and now, beanbags.

“Our population deserves a space where they can feel comforted at all times,” said Principal Dr. Tricia Patterson. “They come to us with a lot of needs—socioeconomically, emotionally, behaviorally. It’s our job to create an environment where they can regulate and then go back to learning.”

The $16,000 project, which culminated in the delivery of the tools on Dec. 3, marks a significant expansion of the Comfort Corners program. Kiwanis Club President Andy Tatnall expressed pride in the initiative, which is expected to positively impact students across the school.

“This is the highlight of our calendar year because this will touch so many students in each of these classrooms,” said Tatnall. “Every year, we choose a major emphasis project. When we asked Dr. Patterson, ‘What do you need?’ this initiative became clear.”

Lockheed Elementary serves a diverse community, with many students facing socioeconomic and emotional challenges outside the classroom. Teachers, counselors, and behavior specialists have integrated the Comfort Corners to ensure they meet the needs of all students without disrupting the learning environment.

By prioritizing emotional well-being alongside academics, the school aims to foster resilience and create a supportive atmosphere for its students.
