A man wanted in connection with four killings in Burke County is dead after he fired at sheriff’s deputies following a car chase early Monday morning.

What happened: Burke County Sheriff’s Office deputies were pursuing the suspect when they used stop sticks, a device that punctures tires to slow or stop a fleeing vehicle, to disable his car. The vehicle crashed at the intersection of Charles Perry Avenue and Girard Avenue. After the crash, the suspect fired several shots at deputies. Deputies returned fire and struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation: Investigators are working two separate homicide scenes connected to the case. One is at a home off Twin Lakes Road. The other is at a home off Tom Bargeron Road. Both scenes were active as of early Monday.

What we know: The four killings that prompted the search for the suspect have not been described in detail. Authorities have not released the victims’ names, ages, or the circumstances of their deaths. It is not clear whether all four victims were found at the two scenes or whether additional locations are involved.

What’s confirmed: Authorities say there is no immediate threat to the public now that the suspect is dead.
