ATLANTA -- One man is dead following a police shooting at the North Avenue MARTA station in Atlanta on Feb. 24.

ATLANTA — One man is dead following a police shooting at the North Avenue MARTA station in Atlanta on Feb. 24.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident after being requested by the MARTA Police Department.

According to the GBI, two undercover MARTA Police Department officers were patrolling inside the North Avenue MARTA station when they observed a man suspected of being in possession of illegal drugs. The officers attempted to detain the man, but officers say he resisted and a physical altercation ensued.

One of the officers deployed a Taser, but the man was still able to escape.

According to the GBI, the man attempted to flee again and pulled out a gun, prompting one of the officers to shoot him.

The man was given medical attention by the officers until EMS arrived and was then taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the man involved has not been released pending next of kin notification. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation into the incident, and once complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
