MARIETTA – A recent incident of graffiti on the Marietta square has prompted the Marietta Police Department to remind residents to report any graffiti they see immediately.

“At a minimum, these need to be reported to MPD as they are acts of vandalism of property. Even more important, we need our investigators to determine who is doing this and why,” the police department said in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Why it Matters: Gangs use graffiti as a form of tagging or marking territory. Police Departments have found a successful way to stave off gang activity is to clean up tagging as soon as possible to prevent gangs from claiming territory and to make tagging less worth it.

Police officials are reminding residents to take pictures of any graffiti or tagging while they are out and about and email photos to gangprevention@mariettaga.gov.
