A 20-year-old man will spend weekends in jail after pleading guilty in the shooting death of a Bulloch County teenager.

What’s Happening: Investigators say Adan Allen Keelin was handling a 9mm handgun last spring when it went off, killing 17-year-old Kelsey McDuffie. Deputies reported Keelin was showing McDuffie how to take the weapon apart and put it back together when it fired. The bullet went through Keelin’s hand before striking McDuffie in the back of her head.

The Sentence: Court records show Keelin pleaded guilty this week to misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. His punishment includes 120 days in jail served on weekends, 80 hours of community service, a $1,500 fine, and drug and alcohol evaluations.

Probation Rules: Prosecutors said Keelin cannot use alcohol or drugs during his probation. He’s also required to complete a firearm safety course, give up any weapons and permits, and have no contact with McDuffie’s family.

Between the Lines: The court’s conditions mean Keelin will be under tight restrictions even after his short jail term. He’ll serve his time across weekends, a move judges often use to allow offenders to keep working or studying during the week.
