BIBB COUNTY — In response to a recent uptick of violence along the Houston Avenue corridor, The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office’s Gang Unit initiated a targeted enforcement action entitled Operation Southern Comfort.
According to residents, this southern section of Macon-Bibb County had become an issue of concern, especially when the tranquility of the community was affected by unnecessary violence.
One of the most notable acts of violence occurred on March 14, when 21-year-old Deshafore Hicks was gunned down and his death was shared on Facebook Live.
Operation Southern Comfort took place from May 1 through May 5 and focused on a 1.5 mile radius of the Houston Avenue corridor. During this effort, Bibb County Sheriff Office’s uniformed and plain clothes deputies worked the area.
Members of the Houston Ave. community and the Sheriff’s office formed a unified partnership in an effort to make the Southside a safer place.
As a result of this partnership, 23 arrests were made and 101 citations were written. Arrests in the area included those for probation violation warrants, drug possession , theft by taking and theft by receiving. The citations were for violations such as traffic violations, maintaining a dive and 75 citations for being present in a dive.
During this operation, deputies arrested 23-year-old Denyke Glenn who was wanted for the April 30 aggravated assault of 21-year-old Shannon Williams at the American Best Value Inn on Romeiser Road. Glenn was also wanted for an aggravated assault that occurred on April 22 at the Houston Ave. Extraordinary Detailing location, where police say Glenn fired shots at his own father who was not injured.
