The Jones County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to watch out for door-to-door contractors offering deals on asphalt paving and pinestraw installation.

What’s happening: The sheriff’s office says these scammers typically show up in warmer months and pressure homeowners into quick decisions.

Red flags to watch for: The sheriff’s office listed several warning signs, including contractors who claim to have leftover materials from another job, push for same-day payment, refuse to provide a written estimate or contract, demand full payment before starting work, or cannot provide local references or proof of a real business.

What the sheriff’s office says to do: Residents are advised to get multiple quotes before agreeing to any work, verify that a contractor holds a valid license and insurance, check reviews and local references, and never pay in full before the job is finished.

The sheriff’s office says residents with concerns about possible scams or suspicious contractors in their neighborhood should call 478-986-3489.
