This Photo of A Traffic Backup in Downtown Atlanta Looks Eerily Similar to the Northern Lights

For those who missed seeing the stunning northern lights display over Georgia over the weekend, the backup on I-85 southbound at I-75 this morning looked eerily similar. A crash blocked the right lanes, causing traffic to snake slowly through the area, much like the sinuous, glowing ribbons of the aurora borealis.

The northern lights made a rare appearance over Georgia on Friday night thanks to a severe geomagnetic storm, thrilling skywatchers who captured stunning photos of the celestial spectacle. But for drivers caught in this morning’s decidedly more earthbound light show, the beauty was harder to appreciate.

As of 7:10 a.m., the lanes have reopened, but residual delays are expected to continue for some time. Commuters are advised to check 511ga.org for updates and to allow extra time for their morning commute.
