The News: After 37 years, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified a woman who was found injured and unconscious near Newton in 1985 as Mary Anga Cowan, who went by “Angie.”
What Happened?: On May 14, 1985, a woman was found injured and unconscious on the west side of GA Highway 91 near Newton, GA. She was taken to a hospital in Albany, where she died from her injuries a few weeks later. The woman remained unidentified for 37 years.
The Investigation: The Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted with the investigation, conducting a medical examination to determine the cause of death as a subdural hematoma secondary to blunt force trauma to the head.
In 2012, a sample of the woman’s bones was obtained for isotope analysis, but no leads were developed.
In 2022, the GBI partnered with the FBI to complete genealogical DNA analysis on the remains, which led to a DNA profile being generated for comparison.
A Breakthrough: In October 2022, the FBI’s genealogical research yielded a high probability that the unidentified woman was Mary Anga Cowan, also known as “Angie.”
DNA from one of Cowan’s children was obtained for comparison, and the results indicated a parent/child relationship.
