Georgia state Representative Carl Gilliard, a Democrat from Savannah and chair of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, issued a statement today urging peaceful protests in response to the release of the video footage of Tyre Nichols’ fatal arrest by the Memphis Police Department.

“In anticipation of the Memphis Police Department releasing the video showing the encounter that led to Tyre Nichols’ death, we urge safe and peaceful protest across Georgia,” Gilliard said. “While we have the right to publicly express our outrage about the unfortunate death of Tyre Nichols, we must also allow justice to be served through the judicial system.”

Gilliard and the members of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, a 501(c)3 non-profit, nonpartisan organization, offered their condolences and prayers to the Nichols family. They emphasized the importance of allowing the evidence presented in the video to guide the judicial process and called for proactive measures to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the state.

The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus is comprised of nearly 70 Georgia House and Senate members and works to protect the general welfare of Black people, people of color, and disadvantaged citizens in the state. For more information, visit www.gablackcaucus.org.
