A 2-year-old girl is in critical condition after sheriff’s officials say she found a gun at a Christmas gathering and shot herself while playing with it.

Bibb County Sheriff’s Office investigators are investigating the shooting that occurred at an apartment on Mumford Road at about 3:31 p.m. Christmas Day.

According to the sheriff’s office, during a Christmas gathering a two-year-old girl found a firearm and was playing with the gun. During this time the gun went off and the child was shot in the head. The girl was taken to the Navicent Health Medical Center for treatment. No one else was injured during the incident. The toddler is listed in critical condition at this time.

Investigators detained 22-year-old Kendarius Leshawn Grimes, of Macon, during the investigation of the shooting. Sheriff’s officials say the firearm the 2-year-old toddler found and shot herself with, was in the possession of Grimes. Investigators say the gun was reported stolen in July of 2020.

Grimes was transported to the Investigations Office for questioning. After questioning Grimes was transported to the Bibb County jail and charged with Cruelty to Children in the 2nd Degree, and Theft by Receiving. He is being held on $12,500.00 bond at this time. This incident is still under investigation.
