LILBURN -- The mayor of Lilburn has resigned his post effective March 1 and announced his intent to run for a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives.

LILBURN — The mayor of Lilburn has resigned his post effective March 1 and announced his intent to run for a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives.

Lilburn Mayor Johnny Crist announced his resignation Tuesday. He has served Lilburn as a council member since 2008 and as mayor of the city since January 2012.

Crist has his sights set on the House District 108 seat, currently held by Democrat Jasmine Clark.

As a result of Crist’s decision, Lilburn’s Mayor Pro-Tem Tim Dunn has also resigned and announced that he will be running for mayor.

Dunn served on the Planning Commission for two years and has served on the Lilburn City Council since 2007.

“I commend Mayor Crist for his leadership and vision during his tenure. We wish him well with future plans,” Dunn said. “I will take this opportunity to seek election as Lilburn’s Mayor, to continue the realization of dreams we have formed together with Lilburn staff over the last decade.”

A special election will be held on May 19 at Lilburn City Hall from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to fill the vacancies in the offices of Mayor and Council Post 4. Lilburn City Hall is at 340 Main Street in Lilburn. For more information about the special election, visit cityoflilburn.com or contact City Clerk Melissa Penate at 770-638-2226.

While in office, Crist led the city’s rebranding and redevelopment efforts. The new Lilburn City Hall-Library building, major improvements at Lilburn City Park, and increased housing opportunities throughout the city are just a few examples of the progress that has occurred during his time as mayor.

Under his leadership, downtown Lilburn is currently experiencing revitalization. The police department and municipal court facility is being relocated to open up opportunities for development in the downtown area, and current development plans include storefronts along Main Street.

Mayor Crist’s understanding of the importance of the arts is reflected in the city. He implemented several art installments, including a beautifully painted piano that guests can enjoy at Lilburn City Hall. He was instrumental in the formation of the Lilburn Arts Alliance and helped bring the award winning Lilburn Tunnel Bridge Mural to downtown Lilburn.
