A beloved local market is back in business after a summer fire nearly destroyed it.
What’s Happening: Community Roots Market opened its doors again this morning in downtown Madison. The fresh foods market has been closed since a fire damaged the building in July.
- The market now sells fresh pasta, organic fruits and vegetables, organic chicken, salmon, and flowers from local farms and makers.
- Owner Cindi Fetch saved parts of the original building, including wooden bookcases and an entrance arch.
What’s Important: The market added more hours to help families shop easier. It now opens at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and added Sunday hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
What’s New: Fetch built a covered outdoor seating area and plans to host a farmer’s market style setup outside in the coming weeks. The market will also sell wine before the holidays.
Catch Up Quick: The July fire badly damaged the building, but thick brick walls protected the front of the store. This let Fetch keep some of the market’s original look while rebuilding.
The Big Picture: Small town grocery stores that focus on local food have become harder to find as big chains take over. Community Roots Market gives Madison residents a place to buy food directly from nearby farms, which keeps money in the local economy and gives families fresher options.
