On just the second day of school in Cherokee County, a student has tested positive for coronavirus.
In a letter to parents, Dr. Ashley Kennerly, principal of Sixes Elementary School said a student in second grade had tested positive for COVID-19.
Students who were deemed “close contacts” of the infected student received a personalized correspondence from the school.
The impacted class has been closed immediately for 14 days and the class will participate in a remote learning program during the quarantine period.
“We continue to encourage all parents to temperature scan and monitor students closely for any sign of potential illness,” Kennerly said in the letter. “Students should remain at home if they are exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, new or persistent cough, headache, loss of taste or smell, fatigue and/or stomach issues.”
The announcement comes on the same day photos spread throughout social media showing high school students in Cherokee County posing for group photos and not practicing social distancing measures.
As of Tuesday, Georgia had 197,948 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 3,921 people had died from the virus.
In Cherokee County, there have been 2,976 cases and 57 deaths.
As of Friday, the Cherokee County School District reported that nine staff members throughout the school system had tested positive for COVID-19.
