Southwest Georgia residents face dangerous heat today, with temperatures and humidity combining to make it feel as hot as 109 degrees.
What’s happening: A heat advisory is in effect from noon to 6 p.m. today for Seminole, Decatur, Calhoun, and Gadsden counties. The combination of heat and humidity can cause heat-related illness.
Stay safe: Health officials recommend drinking plenty of water, staying in air conditioning, and avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day. If you need to be outside, wear loose, lightweight clothing and save hard physical activity for early morning or evening. Check on neighbors and relatives, especially older adults.
Know the signs: Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, and nausea. Heat stroke, which is more serious, can include a high body temperature, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Both require immediate attention.
