In response to increased demand for COVID-19 testing and long delays in getting results back, the state of Georgia is expanding its testing capabilities by bringing on a new testing partner.
The new testing partnership with Mako Medical will provide testing supplies and services to process 10,000 SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests per day. Gov. Brian Kemp’s office says the new partnership will provide test results within 48 hours, on average.
“As demand for testing has soared across the country, many private labs have been unable to process tests quick enough to aid in contact tracing and mitigation efforts. With some Georgians waiting well over a week for their results, the status quo is unacceptable,” Kemp said. “This new partnership will not only expand the number of tests the state is able to administer, but also greatly reduce the turnaround time of those tests.”
On Monday, the state processed 18,462 tests, 13.7% of which came back positive. In total, 10.4% of the 1.2 million test the state has processed have come back positive.
