An alert was declared at the Georgia’s nuclear power plant, Plant Vogte, specifically at Vogtle Units 1 and 2, at about noon today. The alert was later cleared at about 2:36 p.m.

During the time the alert was in effect, Georgia Power declined to release information about the cause of the alert, but afterwards said the alert was due to a transformer fire. The fire was eventually extinguished, according to Georgia Power officials.

Officials are assuring citizens there is no immediate danger to the public, with local and state agencies already informed and involved, but are mum on what the nature of the alert is.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission categorizes alerts as the second least serious among their four emergency levels. Despite the classification, plant operators and officials have yet to clarify what led to this specific alert.

At the time of the alert, John Weissinger, Site Vice President for Vogtle 1&2, emphasized that public and employee safety remains the top priority. “We will provide more details as soon as they are available, and we will continue to do so until this situation is safely resolved,” Weissinger stated.

For further information, the public is directed to the Georgia Power website and social media channels. However, until more is known, the situation remains unclear, fueling speculation and concern in the surrounding communities.
