The Gwinnett County Police Department is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash involving a 13-year old special needs boy who had just been reported as missing yesterday evening.
According to police, at about 10:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, officers were dispatched to a pedestrian-involved crash on Langley Road in unincorporated Loganville. The pedestrian, 13-year-old Jecolia Karikari-Prempe died as a result of his injuries.
Just prior to the fatality call, a woman on Sweet Ashley Way in unincorporated Loganville reported that her 13-year old special needs son was missing. The caller was actively looking for the boy. Once officers arrived, they continued with the search until the crash call came in.
“Based on the preliminary investigation, Jecolia slipped out of the home while the mother was showering. When she went to check on him, she found that his tablet was in the garage, and the garage door was open. She drove around looking for him,” police spokeswoman Michele Pihera said.
Investigators say they believe Jecolia was attempting to cross Athens Highway when he was struck by a red minivan. The location of the collision is about 1.3 miles from his home.
At this time, the driver of the red minivan will not face any criminal charges.
