A baby’s body was discovered near a Riverdale apartment complex on Tuesday, three days after 6-month-old Nnakai Pratt was reported missing.
What It Means For You: The Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy later this week to confirm the identity and cause of death.
What’s Happening: Police began searching for baby Nnakai on Sunday morning after his father, Antonio Pearce, reported the child missing from Valley Hill Road. Pearce told officers he was robbed at gunpoint and that the attackers took his son along with other items.
Between the Lines: Police quickly found problems with the father’s story. Detectives said Pearce gave inconsistent statements and physical evidence suggested foul play. By Monday night, police named Pearce as a suspect in his son’s disappearance.
Catch Up Quick: Pearce was arrested Monday on unrelated charges including marijuana possession, driving without a license and child restraint violations. He remains in custody at the Clayton County jail.
The Big Picture: Search teams spent three days combing the wooded areas around the apartment complex. Bloodhounds from Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, cadaver dogs from Spaulding County Land Air Water Search crews, and detectives reviewing surveillance footage all worked to locate the missing child. The body was found in woods near the front of the complex.
