A search that stretched through the night ended Sunday with the worst possible news.
John Ross III, 6 years old, was found dead in a pond near his last known location in Clayton County Sunday, one day after he was reported missing. The Clayton County Police Department announced his death that evening, saying detectives have opened an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding how he died.
Those circumstances have not been released.
John Ross III was reported missing August 8, 2026. What followed was an extensive, multi-agency search that drew law enforcement, rescue teams, and community volunteers from across the region. The Clayton County Police Department and Clayton County Sheriff’s Office led the effort, joined by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Forest Park Police Department, Georgia Piedmont Search and Rescue, the Butts County Fire Department Dive Team, and numerous other first responders and volunteers.
Police said no additional details will be released while the investigation remains active.
