The fire in South Fulton is under control but the danger still lurks in the air

SOUTH FULTON — The fire that sent heavy smoke over a South Fulton neighborhood Sunday has been brought under control, according to the latest command update from emergency personnel — but the precautions that went up with the smoke are not yet coming down.

South Fulton Fire Rescue responded Sunday to a commercial building fire on the 5500 block of Mallory Road. Falling debris and thick black smoke affected portions of the surrounding area during active suppression operations, and Mallory Road was closed near Waverly Park Drive as crews worked the scene.

Alongside the fire response, the City of South Fulton Police Department issued a smoke advisory. Officials confirmed no toxic hazard has been identified in the smoke plume, though smoke was characterized as an irritant capable of affecting the eyes and throat and causing coughing or difficulty breathing. Residents with asthma or other respiratory conditions were urged to take additional precautions.

Even with the fire under control, residents in the impacted area are still advised to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and avoid drawing outside air into their homes.

The public is also asked to stay clear of the area and not drive toward the scene to observe, so emergency crews can continue their work without obstruction.

Officials are urging residents and businesses to follow the city’s official platforms for any further directions from emergency personnel and to rely only on official city and public safety channels for updates — not unverified information circulating on social media.
