ATLANTA — Four suspects, including two teenagers, were caught trying to break into cars at a northeast Atlanta apartment complex last month, and police found an illegally modified firearm in the process.

What happened: Atlanta Police officers responded to 301 McGill Park Ave. NE on July 30 after someone reported seeing four men getting into a vehicle and pulling on door handles of other cars nearby. A witness gave officers descriptions of the group. Officers searched the area and found all four suspects walking close to the scene.

What police found: Officers recovered a semi-automatic firearm that had been illegally modified to fire like a fully automatic weapon. The modification was made using a device called a “switch,” which is a small illegal attachment that changes how a gun fires. Officers also found several tools commonly used to break into cars.

The arrests: 19-year-old Alex King and 17-year-old Brandon Lewis, both adults under Georgia law, were arrested and taken to the Fulton County Jail. King faces charges of entering an automobile, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, and possession of marijuana. He also had an active warrant from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Lewis faces charges of entering an automobile, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The minors: Two boys, ages 15 and 16, were also detained at the scene. Both were later released to their parents. Their parents were each issued citations for curfew violations.
