Police arrest man accused of killing a Georgia deputy and then stealing his patrol car

Crisp County Sheriff’s Deputy Tyee Browne, 26, of Macon County was killed after a suspect allegedly shot him and then stole the deputy’s patrol car.

According to an ongoing investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Browne responded to a report of a truck parked in the middle of Highway 280 West in Cordele at about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Initial findings reveal that the truck had been reported stolen. While investigating the vehicle, the occupant, identified as Croshawn Cross, 25, allegedly shot Browne and subsequently fled the scene in the stolen patrol car.

Responding Crisp County deputies fired their weapons at Cross as he made his escape.

Despite immediate medical attention from Crisp County EMS, Browne died due to his injuries at a local hospital.

A multi-county pursuit ensued, with law enforcement agencies from Monroe County and Crisp County working together to apprehend Cross. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office successfully arrested Cross on I-475 and also recovered the stolen patrol unit.

Cross now faces multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, theft by receiving stolen property, carjacking, possession of a firearm by convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and theft by taking.
