Sandra Kaye Davis was 22 years old when her body was found beside a home on Kollock Street in Waycross. That was September 1, 1984. She had been strangled.

For more than four decades, her case went unsolved. Then, on March 31, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of Freddie Lee Granger Jr., a 68-year-old living in Ware County. He was charged with one count of rape, one count of aggravated assault, one count of malice murder, and two counts of felony murder in connection with Davis’ death.

The break came through DNA. According to the GBI, continued DNA testing ultimately linked Granger to the crime. Granger was taken into custody on March 31 and booked into the Ware County Jail.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Douglas at 912-389-4103. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online at gbi.georgia.gov, or through the See Something, Send Something mobile app.

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be forwarded to the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
