HOLLY SPRINGS — An undercover drug operation at a Walmart parking lot in Holly Springs ended with law enforcement officers shooting and killing the suspect.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent investigation on June 13.
According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that during an undercover drug operation at the Walmart Parking lot at 2200 Holly Springs Parkway, one man was shot by members of the Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad.
The Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad was attempting to arrest a man delivering suspected heroin. After the shooting, GBI officials say the man, later identified as Normiez Reeves sped off in his SUV on Holly Springs Parkway towards I-575.
Reeves drove southbound onto I-575 northbound exit ramp 14.
According to the GBI, Reeves crashed the SUV into two unrelated passenger vehicles on the northbound exit ramp.
Law enforcement attempted medical intervention at the scene. Medical personnel took Reeves by ambulance to Kennestone Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
This is the 60th officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2022. The GBI had been asked to investigate 41 officer involved shootings at this time last year.
