A North Forsyth County man, with a previous criminal record, was hospitalized in critical condition after allegedly attempting to strangle a woman and then shooting himself, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident started off as a domestic dispute in the early hours of July 30 and rapidly escalated to a tense standoff at a residence on Kelly Drive.

The Forsyth County Magistrate Judge issued an arrest warrant for the man, charging him with aggravated assault, a felony, following the allegations of the attempted strangulation. It was during the execution of this warrant that the situation took a drastic turn.

Despite the efforts of the S.W.A.T. and negotiations team, the sheriff’s officials say the man refused to cooperate or surrender, pushing the situation towards an impasse. A series of what witnesses say sounded suspiciously like muffled gunshots emanating from the residence further escalated tensions.

In response, deputies decided to send a robot into the home before a K-9 Deputy and his partner, along with the S.W.A.T. team, entered the residence. It was there that they found the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Aid was provided to the suspect by the Deputies on site as well as the Forsyth Fire and EMS. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.

No weapons were fired by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Deputies during this incident.
