The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two unrelated inmate deaths at the DeKalb County Jail.

Sheriff’s officials say two inmates have died in unrelated incidents while in custody of the DeKalb County Jail since last week.

Stone Mountain resident Vernon Dennis Head was found unresponsive in his jail cell on Friday July 22 and was pronounced dead following unsuccessful emergency medical treatment by on-site inmate health services and DeKalb EMS.

Head had been in custody since his arrest on Jan. 10, 2021 on charges of terroristic threats.

Today, Decatur resident Nina Maureen Colman died while in the jail infirmary.

Colman was in custody since July 19 on charges of stalking, criminal trespass and simple battery.

The causes of death in both, unrelated incidents are being investigated by the DeKalb Medical Examiner’s Office, and both cases are being investigated internally by the DeKalb Sheriff’s Office, Office of Professional Standards.

No other individuals were involved in either of the incidents.
