A Miami man was arrested in Twiggs County on March 31, 2026, after a traffic stop on Highway 358 at I-16 led deputies to uncover multiple felony warrants, a false identity, and three unrestrained children in the vehicle.
What happened: Deputies with the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit stopped a vehicle after the driver made an illegal U-turn onto an I-16 on-ramp, nearly striking one of the deputies.
The driver: The man gave deputies a false name and date of birth. Deputies identified him as Angelo Smith of Miami, Florida using facial recognition technology. Smith had multiple outstanding felony warrants and was also wanted by his probation officer at the time of the stop.
Additional charges: Smith also faces charges of driving without a valid license. Three children in the backseat of the vehicle were unrestrained, adding further charges to the case.
The path forward: Smith faces multiple charges stemming from the stop. The outstanding felony warrants and probation violation mean he is likely to face proceedings in more than one jurisdiction.
