SAT Scores Slip in Georgia: What We Know

Start

Georgia public school students saw a decline in their SAT scores for the class of 2024, with the average score falling to 1030, down from 1045 in 2023. This represents a slip in performance, even as the state’s students continue to outperform the national average.

The Details: The class of 2024 recorded a mean score of 527 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 503 in math. These results are compared to national averages of 507 and 488, respectively, for public school students across the U.S.

While Georgia’s scores remain above the national public school average, the overall mean score dropped by 15 points compared to last year.

Why It Matters: The drop in Georgia’s SAT scores is a cause for concern, particularly as education officials work to support students following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While participation in the SAT increased slightly this year – 52% of the class of 2024 took the exam compared to 50% in 2023 – the decline in performance raises questions about the effectiveness of current recovery efforts.
