Georgia Man Arrested After Ramming Deputy’s Vehicle During Pursuit

Start

A Macon man faces serious charges after ramming a Bibb County deputy’s patrol vehicle during a high-speed chase on Broadway Saturday night.

The Details: The incident unfolded on August 24 at around 9 p.m. when Bibb County deputies attempted to stop a Ford Expedition driven by 42-year-old Matthew Eric Harper.

Deputies initially observed Harper’s vehicle traveling south on Broadway with high beam headlights that they say he failed to dim. Further checks revealed the vehicle’s registration had been canceled and it had no valid insurance.

When deputies initiated a traffic stop, Harper refused to pull over, leading them on a brief but dangerous pursuit. As the chase progressed, deputies say Harper escalated the situation by intentionally ramming his Ford Expedition head-on into a deputy’s patrol vehicle. The forceful impact resulted in one deputy sustaining a non-life-threatening injury.

Despite the collision, Harper attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by members of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. After receiving treatment for minor injuries at a local medical facility, Harper was taken into custody and transported to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.

Charges: Matthew Eric Harper now faces a slate of charges, including felony aggravated assault on a peace officer for ramming the deputy’s vehicle. Additional charges include felony fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers, no valid insurance, and multiple other traffic and equipment violations. His bond has been denied.
