Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp today announced that he will sign a statewide shelter in place order Thursday that will go into effect starting Friday and ending April 13 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kemp has also ordered all Georgia public schools to close for the remainder of the school year, however, online learning will continue.

Kemp said the new order was prompted by information from the CDC indicating that asymptomatic carriers can spread the disease before they start showing symptoms.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Georgia is 4,638. Georgia’s hospitalization rate for COVID-19 is about 20%.

The majority of cases of COVID-19 in Georgia are still found in residents age 18 to 59. Those 60 and older make up 35% of the total number of cases.
