Do you take Spalding Drive to get to work? Your commute is about to improve

The News: If your commute takes you down Spalding Drive between Winters Chapel Road and Holcomb Bridge, the road is about to get wider and your commute a little lighter.

The Project: Gwinnett County plans to widen Spalding Drive from Winters Chapel Road to just west of the intersection with Holcomb Bridge Road for a distance of about 0.6 miles. The bridge over Crooked Creek also would be replaced and sidewalks would be installed along the bridge and throughout the length of the project. This project will be a coordinated effort by Gwinnett County, the city of Peachtree Corners and the city of Sandy Springs.

How much will it cost?: The total estimated project cost is $11.5 million, with a total local commitment of $9.5 million, or 82.6 percent.

Who is paying for it?: $2 million will be funded through grants made possible by the State Road and Tollway Authority’s Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank program. Gwinnett County’s portion of the funding will come from the 2014 and 2017 SPLOST programs.

When will the project be completed?: According to Gwinnett County spokesman Heather Sawyer, the project will begin construction in late 2019 and will be completed in late 2020.
