Police charge suspect in 2014 slaying of Michael Jones

Gwinnett County Police have charged a suspect in the 2014 slaying of Michael Jones, a 54-year-old man who was initially reported missing by his family in April 2014. In May 2016, Jones’ remains were discovered by a dear hunter in Auburn, Georgia. After examination of the bones, police ruled Jones’ death a homicide.

Now detectives have charged David Thacker in Jones’ death. Thacker is a 41-year-old who is already serving time in Forsyth County on an unrelated charge.

According to police, detectives identified Thacker as a person of interest early in the investigation. Police say Thacker and Jones were acquaintances and were known to have had a disagreement around the time Jones was reported missing.

Police detectives and investigators from the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office have worked the cases over the past four years as leads have become available.  According to police, new information was revealed in recent months, which allowed detectives to obtain warrants for Thacker. He has been charged with aggravated assault and felony murder.

Thacker was served with the warrants at the Forsyth County Jail. He has not yet been transferred to the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
