The City of Dunwoody is adding enhancements to its pedestrian safety network with a new sidewalk along Peeler Road. Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch and Dunwoody City Council Members held a socially-distanced groundbreaking for the project yesterday. Construction is scheduled to begin this month.

“This important project furthers the city’s goal of having sidewalks on both sides of all arterial and collector roads,” said Dunwoody Public Works Director Michael Smith. “It provides additional connectivity to Brook Run Park and will include new bike lanes.”

The new sidewalk will run on the south side of Peeler Road between Equestrian Way and Cherring Lane, where it will tie into an existing sidewalk. The project will include drainage improvements, bicycle lanes on both sides of Peeler Road and marked crosswalks at DeKalb Drive and Cherring Drive that connect to Brook Run Park. The existing Brook Run shared-use path will serve as the sidewalk connection between Cherring Drive and Cherring Lane.

This project is being funded by DeKalb County’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. It will cost $1.25 million and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2021.

The City of Dunwoody is also seeking construction bids for another sidewalk project on Tilly Mill Road. The sidewalk will be five feet wide and will run along the west side of the road between North Peachtree Road and Womack Road. As part of this project, Tilly Mill Road will be widened to accommodate four-foot wide designated bicycle lanes on both sides of Tilly Mill. Construction on Tilly Mill Road is expected to begin later this fall.
