If you’ve been following the coronavirus pandemic in Georgia, you may have read about an 11-year-old in DeKalb County dying from coronavirus. According to state health officials, that story was not accurate and was instead the result of an error in the state’s nightly status update.

The Georgia Department of Public Health listed an 11-year-old child in DeKalb County as one of the deaths from coronavirus in its Thursday night status update. However, department officials are saying that was an error.

So far, no children in Georgia have died from COVID-19.

According to Georgia Department of Public Health spokeswoman Nancy Nydam, the 11-year-old listed on Thursday night’s status update was the result of a clerical error.

“It appears it was a clerical error on the part of the reporting facility. We do not have any records indicating a death of an 11-year-old from COVID-19,” Nydam said.

As of noon Friday, the youngest person to die from coronavirus in Georgia is a 29-year-old woman from Peach County. It is unknown if she had underlying conditions.

According to the Department of Public Health, Georgia now has 5,831 cases of coronavirus, 1,158 people have been hospitalized and 184 people have died.
