While the number of new cases reported in a single day dipped slightly Tuesday, the number of newly reported hospitalizations and ICU admissions increased significantly.

The state added 1,874 new cases, down from 2,207 new cases the previous day. However, the state saw 227 new hospitalizations and 34 new ICU admissions. In the last two weeks the number of hospitalizations reported in one day had not exceeded 190 and ICU admissions had not exceeded 32 in one day.

Georgia currently has 81,291 cases of COVID-19, 2,805 people have died from the virus, there have been 11,051 hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and 2,323 ICU admissions.

In response to increasing cases, the city of Savannah has made mask-wearing mandatory until further notice.

Last week, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said requiring masks was “a bridge too far” in his view, however the Governor and Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey will spend Thursday flying around the state encouraging Georgians to wear masks.
