Alto Cancels November Election After Candidate Withdraws

The Town of Alto won’t be holding its general election this November after all.

Election officials cancelled the November 4 vote after incumbent P.J. Huggins withdrew from the race, leaving all remaining candidates running unopposed.

Here’s who’s heading to office without a contest:

• John Smith for Council Member, Post 1
• Allen Fox (incumbent) for Council Member, Post 3
• Debbie Turner (incumbent) for Council Member, Post 5

According to Georgia law, when candidates run unopposed, they’re automatically considered to have voted for themselves— essentially guaranteeing their win without anyone having to show up at the polls.

The Habersham County Office of Elections & Registration made the announcement on August 5, citing state code that allows elections to be cancelled when there’s no competition for any of the seats.

For Alto residents, this means the current council makeup will stay mostly the same, with Smith being the only new face joining incumbents Fox and Turner.

The cancellation saves the town the cost of running an election where the outcome is already decided. Under Georgia law, unopposed candidates automatically take office at the start of their term.
