ATLANTA — An Atlanta police officer shot a man police say was a suspect in a reported sexual assault at an apartment complex.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, preliminary information indicates that at 12:41 p.m. Tuesday, Atlanta 911 received a report of a sexual assault occurring at an apartment.

A responding Atlanta police officer saw a rented U-Haul truck at the intersection of Woodward Drive and Gibson Street, at the center of the apartment complex. Police say the suspect, 32-yea-old Jamaull Jones, was seated in the passenger’s seat.

The officer made contact with Jones and instructed him to get out of the truck.

According to the GBI, Jones did not follow the officer’s instructions and physically resisted. Police say Jones leaned over the passenger seat and turned toward the officer with a handgun.

The officer fired his gun, hitting Jones.

Jones was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is reported to be in critical condition.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case report will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney for review.
