A man being held at a jail in Augusta was charged with murder Sunday after another inmate died following an assault inside their shared cell, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
What happened: A deputy working the evening shift at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center spotted the attack around 6 p.m. Sunday during a routine headcount. The deputy stepped in to stop the assault and called for help.
The victim: Jail staff and emergency responders gave the injured inmate medical care on the scene. He was taken to Wellstar MCG Health, where he died from his injuries. The sheriff’s office has not released his name.
The charge: 37-year-old Jerry Neal Kimble, who was already being held at the jail, has been charged with murder. A murder charge means investigators believe Kimble caused the other inmate’s death.
What’s still unknown: The sheriff’s office has not said what led to the fight.
