MILLEDGEVILLE — A Milledgeville police officer shot a robbery suspect Wednesday morning after hearing a loud noise and firing his weapon.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, preliminary information indicates that at about 1:40 a.m., a burglary occurred at the Jet #61 gas station, which is located on North Columbia Street in Milledgeville.

At about 4 a.m., a Milledgeville police officer recognized the vehicle matching the robbery vehicle’s description at the Jet #29 gas station, on E. Hancock Street in Milledgeville.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, at which time a chase ensued and the vehicle wrecked in the woods shortly thereafter. According to the GBI, the officer heard a loud noise and shot 50-year-old Antonio Craig Martin of Atlanta.

Martin was airlifted to Navicent Health in Macon where he is in stable condition. At this time, no weapon has been located.

The GBI will conduct its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
