An inmate who walked away from a state-run facility in Augusta three days ago was caught Thursday morning across the state line in North Augusta, South Carolina.
Christopher Leon Craig escaped from the Augusta Transitional Center, on the 600 block of Taylor Street, on August 3. He was taken into custody at about 11:15 a.m. Thursday on the 400 block of Kingstree Road in North Augusta.
What happened: Craig had been reported as escaped by the Georgia Department of Corrections, which runs the Augusta Transitional Center. The facility is a transitional center, a lower-security setting designed to help inmates prepare to return to the community.
The arrest: Craig was taken into custody by federal and local law enforcement, including the U.S. Marshals Service Southeastern Fugitive Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives South Carolina office, and the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
