A burglary at a Smyrna sporting goods store turned deadly late Friday when a suspect was fatally shot by Cobb County officers after reportedly opening fire on police attempting to arrest him. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe into the shooting, which occurred outside Adventure Outdoors.

The Details: The shooting unfolded on September 27, around 11:45 p.m., when Smyrna police officers responded to a reported burglary in progress at Adventure Outdoors, located on South Cobb Drive. As officers tried to apprehend the suspect, gunfire erupted, and a Smyrna officer was shot.

Cobb County officers arrived on the scene moments later, just as the situation escalated. In response to the suspect’s gunfire, Cobb officers returned fire, fatally striking the suspect. No Cobb County officers were injured during the exchange.

What We Know So Far: The name of the suspect has not yet been released. The Smyrna officer who was shot is receiving medical care, though details on their condition have not been made public.
