Scottie Scheffler, currently ranked the number one golfer in the world, is facing several charges for trying to make it to the second round of the PGA Tournament on time.
The athlete was arrested in Louisville, Kentucky, early on Friday, May 17, after trying to bypass an emergency scene to enter the Valhalla Golf Club. According to ESPN, traffic around the course was stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.
It’s unclear what time the arrest occurred, but the publication specifically called out that traffic was still backed up the road at 6:45 a.m., with the road suffering from dark and wet conditions.
Reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the whole thing, said that Scheffler tried to drive around the crash on the median, failing to stop when a police officer ordered him to. The officer reportedly grabbed onto the car while it was in motion, pulling the golfer out of the car once it came to a stop and placing him in handcuffs.

As a result, Scheffler is looking at charges of second-degree assault of a police officer—which is a felony—and third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic, all misdemeanors.
He was released at 8:40 a.m. ET—over an hour after the second round had been scheduled to start—and arrived back at the club less than an hour before he was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m. ET. However, a spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department confirmed that the round had been delayed as a result of the accident.
