Georgia passed another milestone Friday, surpassing 90,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The state added 2,784 new cases Friday, bringing the total to 90,493 cases. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, 2,856 people have died statewide and there have been 11,653 hospitalizations.

Gwinnett County’s case number continues to surge and it leads the state in number of confirmed cases with 9,085. Fulton County has the second-highest number of cases with 7,913. DeKalb County, which has seen a recent uptick in cases, is third with 6,381 cases. Cobb County is fourth with 5,507 and Hall County rounds out the top five counties with 3,357 confirmed cases.

Of Georgia’s total number of cases, 20,586 are among those aged 18 to 29, the largest age group to contract COVID-19. The next age group with the most infections is 30 to 39-year-olds, making up 15,236 cases.

State officials are concerned that large groups of people not social distancing and not wearing masks over the Fourth of July weekend will cause the recent surge in cases to go higher.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp completed a tour of the state yesterday, visiting several cities with Georgia’s director of public health and the U.S. Surgeon General in tow encouraging residents to wear masks.
