As Georgia continues to reopen and school systems begin determining how they will open for the new school year, coronavirus cases continue to rise.
The Georgia Department of Public Health reported 1,227 new coronavirus cases today, marking the fourth day this month that the state has added more than 1,000 new cases in a single day.
Statewide there are now 65,928 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 2,648 deaths from the virus.
The Georgia Department of Public Health website is showing a sharp increase in the 7-day rolling average since shelter-in-place orders were loosened and the state began opening up last month. Looking ahead at the days that are currently in the state’s 14-day reporting window, the number of cases is expected to increase beyond the numbers seen on April 22, when the 7-day average was believed to have peaked.

Gwinnett County continues to grapple with an uptick in new cases and now has a total of 6,407 confirmed cases and 162 total deaths. Fulton County now has 5,705 cases and 304 deaths.
Department of Public Health figures also show that coronavirus is not isolated to older residents and nursing homes. Among 18 to 29 year olds there have been 12,278 cases, 493 hospitalizations and 11 deaths.
Georgians aged 30 to 39 have had 10,633 cases, 848 hospitalizations and 45 deaths.
Looking at Georgia’s school-aged population, children aged 10 to 17 have accounted for 2,052 cases, 55 hospitalizations and one death. Children ages 5 to 9 have accounted for 671 cases and five hospitalizations, while children ages 1 to 4 have had 491 cases and 17 hospitalizations. Babies under one year old have accounted for 158 cases and 8 hospitalizations.
