Atlanta Police Officer Shoots Suspect During Attempted Vehicle Break-In

An Atlanta police sergeant fired their weapon, injuring a suspect, during an apparent vehicle break-in in progress Tuesday night, authorities said.

Details scarce: Officers were called to 241 Forsyth St. SW shortly before 8 p.m. after a sergeant spotted a parked car with a shattered rear window and broken glass on the ground. A male suspect was seen inside the backseat.

Encounter unclear: The sergeant approached the vehicle and an encounter ensued, the details of which remain under investigation. At some point, the officer discharged their firearm, striking the suspect.

Suspect injured: The suspect, whose identity hasn’t been released, sustained a gunshot wound but was alert, conscious and breathing when transported to a local hospital. Their current condition is unknown.

Firearm recovered: Police recovered a firearm from the suspect’s person. The sergeant involved in the incident was uninjured.

GBI takes lead: The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, per standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, has been requested to lead the investigation. The Atlanta Police Department will provide further updates as information becomes available.
